Spring Break and SXSW

In the coming week, Austin will experience two major changes. First) Tomorrow UT students officially begin spring break, along with most of the country. Undergrads will travel to South Padre, Datona Beach and virtually anywhere with illustrious amounts of sand, water, and the opposite sex. Because UT students comprise such a vast population of Austin, it will certainly be a noticeable departure.

This leads to the second major change: the South by Southwest music, film, and interactive festival. Both talent and corporate big-wigs flock to SXSW with hopes of encountering their next big thing. Both in their boisterousness and numbers, SXSW attendees will certainly provide Austin with the spark it is losing with departing students.

With these two occasions in mind, I will offer a healthy option for both

Spring Break

Low Calorie Alcoholic drinks. Obviously college students on spring break will drink a lot. But to keep those beach bodies, it is important to gravitate towards drinks with low calories. Webmd recommends using diet sodas or orange juice, cranberry juice, or lemonade as mixers.

Those attending SXSW will probably need to resist the binary urges of expense accounts and fabulous Austin restaurants. A good option is to indulge yourself for breakfast or lunch, I recommend Nueva Onda, Torchy’s Tacos, or Juan and a Million. None of these places are healthy. However, it is much better to eat an unhealthy breakfast than an unhealthy dinner, and be realistic, you’re going to pig out at some point.

The blog is taking next week off, so have a happy and safe spring break/sxsw experience!

  1. Although most of it is really unhealthy, there will be a lot of free food during SXSW. When you build your schedules, keep an eye out for notices saying free food for early arrival.
